Rules & Regulations


PUBLIC INTERACTION

  1. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING may be thrown or handed from the parade entrants to the public spectators.
  2. If you wish to gift or distribute materials to the public, you must get the items pre-approved by the Whatcom Memorial Day Parade Committee prior to the day of the parade.
  3. Upon approval, you must provide two people, one person on each side of the street, to walk on the sidewalk behind the crowd line to ensure spectators remain off the street as items are being disseminated.
  4. Parade entrants are not allowed to hand out any consumables (e.g., food, beverages, etc.) to the public spectators.
  5. Parade entrants are not allowed to mingle with or accost spectators along the parade route.
  6. Alcohol beverages are forbidden on any float, vehicle, or on any person participating in the parade.

VEHICLES, FLOATS, INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPANTS

  1. All parade entrants are restricted to forward movement to maintain safety at all times. A space of 20 feet between each unit will be enforced. Parade officials will enforce the spacing requirements to prevent mishaps, therefore, cooperation is paramount.
  2. Bands must maintain forward movement at all times; failure to do so will result in disqualification.
  3. No loud sirens, horns, or any noises are permitted in order to avoid interfering with band performances and equestrian entries.
  4. WITHOUT EXCEPTION, parade entrants riding on motorcycles MUST WEAR HELMETS ALL TIMES when under power and obey traffic rules and parade official instructions.
  5. Floats may not be taller than 13 feet from street level.
  6. A ten-pound fire extinguisher is required for all specialty units and floats.
  7. No additional vehicles (including but not limited to cars, vans, or scooters) will be allowed to accompany marching units unless deemed necessary and approved by the Whatcom Memorial Day Parade organization. Vehicles must be declared during the registration process.
  8. Equestrian entrants must provide a cleanup crew. Cleanup is required during and after the event.
  9. Dignitaries are responsible to supply their own signage and vehicle throughout the parade.

SPIRIT OF PARADE COMPLIANCE

  1. The Whatcom Memorial Day Parade is a non-political, community-oriented, family-friendly event that honors the dignity of a specific national holiday. As such, it reserves the right to accept or reject any entry application, upon review, that is not suitable in honoring such a holiday.
  2. Parade entrants can not display any form of advocation or opposition of political, religious, or social issues on your vehicle, float, or person.
  3. Political electioneering (e.g., petitioning, politicking, canvassing, signature gathering, politically deemed activities, etc.) is strictly prohibited and will be enforced by the parade staff.
  4. The Whatcom Memorial Day Parade Committee reserves the right to withdraw any entry where costumes or performances do not meet the standards of reasonable public taste or conform to the parade rules. All decisions regarding parade entrants are final.

POLITICAL ENTRY COMPLIANCE

  1. The Whatcom Memorial Day Parade is a non-political, community-oriented, family-friendly event that honors the dignity of a specific national holiday. As such, it reserves the right to accept or reject any entry application, upon review, that is not suitable in honoring such a holiday.
  2. Parade entrants can not display any form of advocation or opposition of political, religious, or social issues on your vehicle, float, or person.
  3. Political electioneering (e.g., petitioning, politicking, canvassing, signature gathering, politically deemed activities, etc.) is strictly prohibited and will be enforced by the parade staff.
  4. Candidates for public office may register an entry introducing themselves. Signage should only display the candidate’s name and the position they seek or currently hold.
